Workshop: Providing care to homeless individuals in acute care settings

On January 13th, RIMNP anchoring provider, Caitlin May, NP, and RIMNP case manager, Megan Smith, of House of Hope, held a workshop on delivering care to patients experiencing homelessness for fifteen Dedicated Education Unit nurses from inpatient units at Rhode Island Hospital. The nurses had requested material on homelessness issues because individuals experiencing homelessness represent a large proportion of their patient population. The workshop included a discussion on the intrinsic and extrinsic factors leading folks to homelessness, upstream and downstream interventions, and numerous community resources in the Rhode Island area.

After the presentation, Smith and PATH forensic psychology intern, Nate Capalbo, participated in a simulation that centered on a patient experiencing homelessness.
